Air freight shipments are calculated on the chargeable weight, which may vary from the actual weight, based on converting the cubic measurement of the shipment.
The chargeable weight is the greater of:
(a) Gross Weight or
(b) The result of the following volumetric conversions:
1. Airfreight: 1 kilogram equals 6000 cubic centimetres
or 1 cubic metre equals 166.666666 kilograms
Example: Volumetric calculation
1 pallet: 150 x 100 x 95 cm. Actual Volume = 1.425 cubic meters (M3). Actual weight = 135kgs.
Calculating Volumetric Weight: 1.425 cbm is divided by 0.006 = 237.5
237.5 is the volumetric weight of the shipment in Kilograms.
This would mean that the Chargeable weight in this case is the volumetric weight as it is the greater amount (237.5kgs), and will be applied to calculate the airfreight charges.
